Engaging youth in the school community through sport and physical activity
Bringing together student athletes, coaches, athletic directors, teachers, principals and community members, the initiative works to learn from the successes and challenges of school sport in First Nations communities, creating new opportunities for success in both sport and non-competitive activities.
In-person meetings highlight local ideas and solutions, and share lessons and tools between school boards. Through partnerships with Alberta Sport Connection and the Indigenous Sport Council of Alberta, participants are able to teach, learn, and develop new opportunities for their students to be active and resilient, including free or low-cost coaching and officials training, clearer access to tournaments and Games, and seed funding for novel school practices.
The work began in Southern Alberta in 2015/16
In Southern Alberta, this initiative is supported by Makadiff Sports and the Wellness Fund.
